11P - The Boxing Lesson is a psychedelic progressive rock band based in
Austin, TX. Currently a power trio with synthesizers performing the bass
player's role, they create a mammoth layered sound that usually starts
minimally and builds into grand orchestrations. The band consists of
vocalist and guitarist Paul Waclawsky, synthesizer player Jaylinn
Davidson, and drummer Matt Bongirno. The band traces its roots to
L.A., where the group formed around frontman Paul Waclawsky in 2002.
Despite lineup changes, drug arrests, and a move to Austin, the group
has remained largely consistent, with each release offering up a new
slab of psych to digest. Their most recent release, “Health Is The New
Drug,” has already been hailed by Houston Press as the best song of the
year, despite only being released in February. "Relying on MOOG for
bottom end and tons of sonic noise, the songs blend Meddle-era Floyd
guitar freak-outs with M83 propulsion, Spiritualized soul space jams
with Texas rock ’n’ roll thunder." Creative Loafing Charlotte http://theboxinglesson.wordpress.com/
12A - Experimental grunge punk outfit Megafauna is led by powerhouse guitar
heroine Dani Neff and redefines the boundries of the standard indie rock
format. The band layers gorgeously serene vocals on a rock and roll
foundation which seamlessly alternates between blasts of garage rock and
moody electronic textures. Local poet laureate Thax Douglas has
proclaimed that they are “one of the best bands on the planet.” Falling
somewhere between the anxious enjambed rhythms of Deerhoof, and the
siren-like vocals of English shoegazers My Bloody Valentine, Megafauna
have a rounded sound that is hypnotic while still retaining a lot of
physicality. http://megafaunarock.com/
10P - Psych-pop from East Austin. From east Austin, Melogrand was formed by
three former members of art-pop group The Story Of. A long time friend
from Ohio moved from California to fill their sound. Through their love
of melody and sonic expansion, the psych-pop sound of Melogrand began to
emerge. In the spring of 2010, Melogrand recorded a two-song 7" at Jim
Eno's Public Hi-Fi with engineer Matt Colecchi, releasing 100
hand-printed albums and playing only a handful of shows. Their music
blends a mix of pop sensibility, psych-laden landscapes with touches of
electro-pop and pragmatic optimism. Melogrand's debut LP, Waves for the
Ages, is out now. http://www.melogrand.com/
